About Hounds for Heroes
The Hounds for Heroes charity provides specially trained assistance dogs to injured and disabled men and women of both the UK Armed Forces and Emergency Services.
The dogs give help and practical support, leading to an enhanced quality of life.
The Roles of the Assistance Dogs
The dogs are carefully selected for the qualities needed to produce excellent assistance dogs. There is a small army of puppy parents who help with the first year of training. The dogs then enter advanced training to turn them from well-behaved dogs into fully trained assistance dogs.
The dogs not only increase quality of life through tasks such as opening doors, picking up items and getting money from ATMs, but they also bring companionship and love that can be missing when someone becomes disabled. When the dogs are fully trained, the ownership will be fully transferred to the disabled partner.
The History of Hounds for Heroes
In 1991, Allen Parton was a Chief Petty Officer serving in the Royal Navy during the Gulf War. He had a very promising military career ahead of him, with a wife and two children at home in Portsmouth. Then as a result of a tragic operational incident in the aftermath of Operation Desert Storm, his life was changed completely.
Allen suffered a severe head injury, which left him with considerable physical and emotional trauma. It wiped out his memory and left him unable to walk, speak or write. He couldn’t even remember getting married or the birth of his children. He spent the next five years in hospital, struggling to come to terms with his disabilities.
Eventually Allen was partnered with Endal, a yellow Labrador assistance dog. Endal helped to save Allen’s marriage and helped to rebuild a relationship with his children.
This amazing partnership led Allen to set up Hounds for Heroes.
Seraquin supports Hounds for Heroes
Seraquin is very proud to be a partner of Hounds for Heroes. Since 2013, Boehringer Ingelheim has made a donation for every purchase of Seraquin sold in the UK. Through a combination of the donations made through Seraquin sales and a number of educational veterinary roadshows (the Chronic Care Lectures), Boehringer Ingelheim has donated over £50,000.
